Events at Doktor Luke's

Sunday, December 17 Doors 6:00 PM | Event 6:30 PM

Begin the holiday season with your mind, stomach and senses fulfilled! On the closing night of A Christmas Carol at the Highland Arts Theatre, Doktor Luke’s invites you to join us before the show at our coffee house for a fundraiser in support of mental health in Cape Breton.

Every $20 ticket includes coffee, tea, a serving of homemade figgy pudding soaked in a brandy hot sauce and a delectable—and brief!—talk by Doktor Luke (Dr. Julie Sutherland) about the resilience of the human spirit and food in the Victorian period. Most importantly, she’ll answer the question you’ve always pondered, What exactly is figgy pudding anyway?

You will also have the opportunity to win a pound of Doktor Luke’s ethically sourced coffee. Please bring cash for the draw.

Proceeds will stay in Cape Breton via ReLit, the foundation for bibliotherapy: the complementary treatment of stress, anxiety and other conditions through slow reading. Staff and patrons at ReLit believe that attentive immersion in great literature, especially poetry, can relieve, restore and reinvigorate the human mind.

Guests are then encouraged to attend the closing night of A Christmas Carol at the Highland Arts Theatre, just two doors down from Doktor Luke’s. Tickets for the play are sold separately.

You will leave Doktor Luke’s on December 17 feeling inspired, and ready to spread holiday joy.

For tickets ($20) bring cash to Doktor Luke’s. You can also e-mail Julie Sutherland ( for more info and arrange to send your ticket money via Interac e-transfer. Sales run until Dec. 16 (while tickets last).

Tickets to A Christmas Carol sold separately.
